Opportunities for More Jobs and a Boost in the State’s Economy
There has been a fair amount of buzz around the Marcellus Shale formation, which spans underneath a few states, including New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Drilling underneath the shale releases natural gas, a resource that could be very valuable in days when America is working hard to become independent in providing the country with its own natural resources. It is said that several trillion cubic feet of natural gas are held below the shale.
Penn State University recently did a study that predicted that drilling under the Marcellus Shale could provide thousands of jobs for Pennsylvanians in the next three years. On top of that, billions of dollars in royalties could become a realization for the state, which could be reflected in the communities through improvements made in schools and roads and the development of new businesses.
Despite these potential benefits, hesitations linger around the idea of drilling. The main concern is regarding the large amounts of water required for the drilling process. Environmentalists do not want our natural resources to be put into jeopardy.
In light of these concerns, the PA DEP has announced that they are taking measures to assure that Pennsylvania’s water resources are protected. Regulations have been put into place delineating from where and how much water can be taken for the use of drilling for natural gas underneath the Marcellus Shale. Any group planning to drill is required to go through an application process in order to obtain a permit to do so. These are some of the ways that the department is promising to avoid a strain on streams and drinking water wells, in particular. The DEP’s priority, of course, is to protect natural resources and to make sure that the drilling is done in the safest way possible. At the same time, officials want Pennsylvanians to benefit from the most opportunities possible that the Marcellus Shale feasible could create.
